Tuxedo, the new eponymous album from duo Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, is everything I’d hoped it would be. Giving off some serious pop-funk vibes, it’s the more upbeat cousin to the Tuxedo Valentine’s Day mix tape, their synth-heavy sets and smooth voices providing melodic tunes that are both catchy and fun. Listening to the album, I found myself giving in to the irresistible urge to get up and boogie. And I have a feeling I’m not the only one.
The culmination of the collaboration between the formidable duo, Tuxedo, while not exactly bold, is enormously easy to listen to (and obviously easy to groove to) and showcases the wide-ranging talents of both members of the group, who have managed to garner quite a name for themselves through their individual projects and collaborations with many of today’s most established hip-hop/soul artists. In fact, everything right down to the titles of tracks “Get U Home”, “I Got U”, and “R U Ready?” speak to the lighthearted quality of the album, begging us not to take anything too seriously, except perhaps the fact that Tuxedo is far from done impressing us.
