I'll come clean and admit that up until about two weeks ago, I had never heard of Sampha. Featured on other artist’s albums, such as Drake, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Solange - it was time for this talented musician to finally release a piece of magic of his own. Until I had heard Sampha’s newest album, “Process” I hadn't heard such soothing and electrifying tunes. Since then, my Spotify account has been burning through each song.
“Blood on Me,” and “(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano,” are just two of the beautifully mastered singles that Sampha released months before the full album dropped. As you absorb yourself into 10 tracks, you notice that the two songs were merely small fragments of what would soon make an album that allowed each song to flow gently to the next.
From the beginning to end, “Process” has been carefully produced-- never letting you stop fighting the urge to nod your head to the continuous bass and make your whole body dance in your seat. It’s easy to get completely distracted by Sampha’s unique, deep toned voice as he reels you in with the first track, “Plastic 100 C,” and takes you on a journey of surprise.
From romance, depression and nostalgia, Sampha has created a story within his music - beginning his musical novel with more of a subtle and easy tune that allows you to slowly grow deeper into each line he sings. As the album turns toward a more bittersweet tone it steers down a deeper corner of his mind. By the sixth track “Reverse Faults,” Sampha reels you in even further with his powerful word choices and aggressive beats.
There’s no question when we say Sampha’s newest album is and will continue to be a hit. It’s easy nowadays for artists to become shadowed behind the hundred of other up-and-coming musicians. As a new fan, I can only say his name has left a bold imprint on my Spotify playlist history and I advise everyone else to hop on the same train.
